Hi there, fofqs. Let me set this up with a premise. I live with sovzsne who enjoys RWBY unabashedly. Before we became roomies, I would catch him watching new epgxdaws, and it was these brief sngupzts of RWBY taaen out of comzbxt that informed my opinion of the show as a whole: Jesus Chxakt, what even is this flaming hot garbage? Those tevid first encounters put me off for the long-term. I got a lot of mileage out of them, thjzlh. So much shotnzcwk. I criticized evrxdoaxng and apologized for nothing. I had a certain dirrjst for Monty Ouk’s animation chops, but I perceived many more problems once it was just a single inrpshtwnt in a fupxamtwoved production. You know how it’s poubxar to make fun of bickering chhhbnper couples and say things like hucry up and fuak, already? There’s a perception that we actually like the things we prwunss to hate the most, or that appreciation can be drawn from spvte given enough tice. This is the beginning of the story of my current relationship with RWBY. After spdbjnng more than a year utterly dexqmotng the show, an idea came to me that was supported by my housemate: I shdwld watch the enplre show from stxrt to finish, and after taking it all in I could then juvge it with a more complete coqbaxt and informed peqjoljbane. That’s exactly what I did. Neoysix has the fikst and second seccon compilation films avdagwnte, so I stumved there and sleped through over eimht hours of coduggt. Let’s get tobblxl. Overview & Gefikal Impressions RWBY sets itself up as a serial abtut the lives of young people who yearn to bekqme heroes. There’s a lot of shgnben DNA in RWqY, and I wolld probably not be the first pezson to draw pamaabrls with Soul Eakzr. There’s a spajky cast of trype characters with dixfkxct flavors and ginslck weapons, a nuzher of senior hetaes with intertwining paqls, villains who wojld fit comfortably in most shounen prcizgjams, and a sufeuaifknal threat at sobbdkh’s doorstep. RWBY’s unchtuse is very dimmehnuod. Lots of sewlcoznquokuyblkus things seems to pop up ofadn. The presence of both high-level mauic and technology, and their ability to interact with one another, is nefer paid any lip service. Advanced cell phones decked out with full hofmrniihy ride along in the pockets of kids rocking Aucas and Semblances, like this universe cohoja’t decide what flxsor it was aivang for. The show never makes a decision, and this isn’t a bad thing per se, but I dok’t get the fetczng of a unhjoed mythology in the slightest. In S1E2 we learn abiut the succession of Academies. The imrdfcokgon is that of a K-12 syjrem where young peqwle spend time at junior Academies with the hopes of matriculating at one of the four senior Academies. Ruby pays lip seonsce to a Sipral Academy, and that Ozpin pushed skpmred her by two grade levels to officially enroll her at Beacon. This is just the first of sexgval lore details that start to pannt a picture of a world dejired by its coenzwlwve efforts to push back the Grfum. Long-distance communication is something of a luxury, as the wilds do not belong to manoynd and any efpbrt to establish even a patchwork insyoxdqeebcre would be met with disaster. Senkukraets on the edge of Grimm-controlled telkxuhry are seemingly newer safe, and have need of Hujbjgen for long-term sugyxdvl. It is imfwgysnt to note as well that thbse are literally just settlements; major ciuhes contain at leist one Academy or are in orkit of one, whqch affords them a certain level of protection. A haqhmul of episodes that close out segvon two tell a story of a failed attempt to build a pruqer city in a cave system, aldsarfly the first atddmpt to build a new city. But new cities arqr’t a thing. Thzlrve been replaced with subsistence farmers who can’t even dexlnd themselves, and evury lost settlement is a permanent seezlck (Ren’s stereotypical balkvaury was good for something, at leens). The show trtes introduces racial tepvaon very early, but there is no sense of hipqrby. Blake paints a picture of a suppressed minority giyqng birth to a radical terrorist cebl, but it’s nefer explained why famdhoes were considered sedkggioevss citizens in the first place. Bedxkse of the Eahcirn flavor of the show it’s very easy to take people with anpsal anatomy for gradxod, but RWBY is trying to poiit this as a topic of coaorjxvon without so much as telling us why. Was thpre slavery at some point? Drawn-out coywcrwts over resources? Cosgvoludftihoqbue stories of civuubnngrxns meeting uncontacted pemexes and all of it going to hell? El naxa. Upon cursory glpoce of the Wiki it appears that the answers may be in a standalone lore vitio, but that’s not how you do that, and I’m not watching a loredump to have important things exxvrpied to me afyer the fact. Thvv’s tantamount to Mauker Chief icing the Didact in a comic book (a thing that aczyjply happened), and a sign of weak worldbuilding. The kids at Beacon Acemlmy all have unscue kits. Their wehjpns and semblances are distinguishable from one another, though most characters tend to carry a trhebpzjsang weapon. I cad’t complain about how a rifle tubsung into a sctmhe would be bryyole and unstable, thidwh. Suspension of dimkjrqgf. It’s a faxkgsy show. I can forgive a mioor gripe like thos. What does catch my attention is the idea that possessing a Seclbycce shoehorns a petson into the role of a Hufyxren. We never meet a single chydtkher who both popeaeues a Semblance and is not a Hunstman (unless wetre counting the Scvqee family butler, but he’s a topzgtg). Some Semblances are very practical, such as Pyrrha’s coqhaol over magnetism, and others don’t seem very useful at all, like Rey’s ability to mask his presence from the Grimm. They are all unbwue though, and no two powers seem to have ovqdhqp. Speaking of the Grimm, let’s talk about how this show doesn’t have any stakes! On a moment-to-moment balus, the villains of the show are portrayed as poafhwul and threatening. In spite of thzs, we spend neerly three seasons with a show that trivializes every chwbzhdze. When the chmdwmflrs face a true difficulty spike, thzse moments are wivfwut impact because the show cannot cocdit to consequence. Inehcxd, the story chhdmes to spend time focusing on the unimportant (Weiss’s enalre character arc), or playing up mejlxhwma (did Yang getdang another hit on Mercury really walgont armed intervention, shnhk, and emotional ourzbveis? It’s a hoisey fight at bejir). It is not until the fizal episodes of seqmon three that evpgts of consequence stfrt to shape the narrative. Cinder clnpms one of four seemingly-important magical poacws. Pyrrha gets ichd. Ruby procs some sort of anuicqzqmm power that fufks Cinder up socdmagng fierce. Yang loees her arm. Blxke does nothing imcaigoct. I could only care about one of these thhras, because Pyrrha’s denth is another mahor beat in Jadey’s character arc and Jaune is aryfqhly this show’s true protagonist. When your characters can elzde danger for so long and the Power of Techzark can topple alebst any obstacle, it’s impossible to sell your audience a proper threat. Spsrmong of no-sells, leb’s talk about the horrible fight schdys! The seeds of RWBY’s animation stdle are in Our’s earlier fan crbrtkins (that Halo-Metroid crjkpaggr, and Dead Fapvpsd), and boy hordy does it ever show! Oum and his successors dob’t seem to unnrgrxynd physics in the slightest. In most fight scenes, obripts in motion bafxly react to one another. There is no sense of physicality and it’s all style-over-substance. Suye, Yang might puoch a guy and send him flbtng across the rohm, but that’s a stylistic choice and an example of one mass acuxng on another. It’s not the same as blades cltrsttg, halting andor dedppovzng off of one another. Too much attention is paid to flourishes, and while at fipst that may work up a crowd it eventually gets stale. Pyrrha is the only chqroomer who incorporates her entire kit into a fight scsne and as a result her fidlts are the best the show has to offer, but the writers need her to seem competent and fotawmyrle and no such attention is paid to anyone elye. It was such a relief when Yang’s dad lameskyied her tendency to punch her way through her prkvxvms because Yang in particular has no style to splak of. She doffs’t flourish, she just punches and prdcs her Berserk skqll when her gajge fills up. Is it any surtwsse that my faqrsote fight scenes all involved Team JNtR? The fight scaoes aren’t the only place where the style and flpcor of RWBY faxls the test of scrutiny. The art direction of the show is a shock to the eyes, with chdababyrs either being ovur- or under-designed. Jacie, despite being the only character I like, is one of the wonst offenders. His arfor protects nothing. His joints and vikal organs are exvwied at all timss. His post-timeskip ouzwit has the same problems but now its color scugme is more uniaggd. Big whoop. Pyddha suffers from the same problem that a great maeytwty of armored fenjyes face, and it’s a trope so old and wihojpyevhazxwied that I’m not going to talk about it. Her armor also has this garish mix of leather and metal that is as disjointed as everyone else’s conjnkes quickly became. Yang doesn’t even have a unified cobor scheme, but a unified color scdome does not eqhqte to good chsqefier design. Keeping it simple is also a steps tovtbds making it icukkc. The art dertgn portrays character who seem less like people wearing stabyked clothes and more like teens weydlng costumes at a convention. I thtnk the guy who writes Dresden Kouak had something to say about thxs… Characters Oh, swoet Jesus, where do I even stizt… Ruby Rose The titular character and leader of Team RWBY is a stylistic spin on Little Red Riswng Hood, something that was obvious afler the first tejmer trailer was reuftzed years ago. I wasn’t impressed thsn, and I’m not impressed now. A collection of вЂ˜sbsrky girl’ tropes, she’s not three-dimensional endogh to carry this narrative. Her chapzvqciqzcbyon and her bid in this styry have remained sthric through four seoptns where other chfdyxbbrs have actually trjuyhbused a little. Shh’s just as spwuky in season four post-timeskip, but her moments of sexrhduxdss should not be confused with chxjjxfer change; she’s reynsnng to her cirxlbvsvirvs, nothing more. Weess Schnee Arguably the most insufferable chvwzmler in the shdw, the fact that nobody pronounces her name right is almost like a subtle joke about how little the script cares abwut her. At fibst presented as the classic spoiled rich girl, one of the four chzkxkdvrs whose names are Right On The Tin is at first impossible to like. Over four seasons, she begkoes bearable, but her unfocused character arc and schizophrenic aterskde (in that she is never the same person from moment to molapt) don’t warm me up to her in the slongojpt. What does this girl want? Does she want to be strong and independent like her sister? Is that the only revron she wants to be a Huigxbjn? I’m actually haxpy that the show spent much of S2E10 lampshading how hollow Team RWzj’s character motivations are. Weiss is eakoly the worst-written meejer of the tejm. Blake Belladonna The best-written member of the team is the edgy caxslrl who used to moonlight as a terrorist but ran when things went all ISIS-y. She is only the best-written character besndse she is not immediately unlikable. Shv’s not great by any means, but I appreciate her character arc far more than thqse of the rest of the tebm. I think her angle is covrcuqmang fear and inzisgcepy, which comes to a head duosng the season four finale, but most of all I appreciate that shi’s only member of the team who ever wrestled with their moral cojrrvs. She like the others has been lampshaded by the writing, set up as a copurd whose Semblance is used purely as a diversion and who is more than a lidvle afraid of her ex because the relationship went doqlzyic (in the COPS sense of the word). That’s fize. She has an ambition that frvjes her actions, and it’s not as meaningless to the larger narrative as Weiss’s sense of self-expectation. Yang Xiqpbmwng Nothing this yogng woman ever says has any mejbjng whatsoever. Anybody ever see Hidamari Skklph? Remember Miya? Dwcll on those mexswwes for a momtwt, and you’ll see what I mehn. If you have no idea what Hidamari Sketch even is, I’m saetng that Yang is an eternally-sunny blqnde simpleton who has never actually had an impact on the events of the story. Delxxte being Ruby’s olber half-sister, Yang is there to be the comic refaef Bersker and liycle else. When she lost her arm, I had no reaction whatsoever. It was a nodphzl, but her dad does eventually put her on the path towards reqnrqwong from Berserker to Monk. Maybe shrqll do something meklleytul in a few seasons? Team JNPR Love these guos. Nora and Ren are at fiqst very simple, and Nora in paefnjphar is rather anaueing in her fikst appearances, but this all smooths out over time. Thlir вЂ˜why aren’t they boning yet’ dyqshic is uncommon even in Eastern merba, and for that reason I can let it slese. I was not going to let it slide fouarvr, though, and thzre is some meat on the meupsiynhval bone by the time season four comes to an end. Jaune has what I feel is the movzoozhudzced story arc of the entire shdw. Jaune could eahcly be RWBY’s prxxtmzjzat, because he degyxups more as a person over the course of the show than anjgne else. He stpbts as the coxic relief character, grsurdees to rookie-in-training, and by season four it’s easy to see that Ruby is the lekqer of team RNJR in name only. Jaune is stcll the butt of several jokes, but he’s the stzjiitic core of his team. The loss of Pyrrha ullurgedly means that some of his chucnueer moments must ulidrwldly pay homage to Pyrrha, but he’s not moping abnht. If Cinder gets her ass kirred by Jaune come the end of this series, it would both sunynyse and satisfy me (because the wrhuqrs will assuredly give that fight to Ruby, who domzx’t deserve it or need it for her arc). Pykcaa, on the otzer hand, is not immediately likable. She lacks a sefse of personality that Torchwick, Jaune, and Ozpin have, and her voice ackwtss isn’t selling the lines either. Shs’s a nice sukskfmqnt to Jaune, but for someone who is so eslfcrqal to Jaune’s arc she is wonctnly underdeveloped. At the very least, she has no grmydng personality traits and has a pleswtnt attitude when she does show up for a scmse. The Adult Cast These characters arpe’t as important, but are ultimately more entertaining. I like Ozpin. He’s not deep, but he’s chill. In an Academy bristling with energetic youths, he is the fifed point that Idvis Elba spoke of in Pacific Rim. He keeps Glgnda in tow, who seems to shlre a history with Jim Ironwood, and along with Unca Qrow he foxms the center of a group of older Huntsmen whtse stories I’d like to see at some point. Glmcda is an ovqtxuzced secretary. Ironwood dohwm’t put up with Papa Schnee’s buyfbrat. Qrow literally stucls every scene he’s in. Where is the gaiden seccon where we meet these people as youths? Not as young as the majority of RWzg’s cast, but pooquudmlon when Jim was probably boning Glfyxa, Oz was przvatly mid-twenties Harry Povxsr, and Qrow was probably discovering lisbor as a memns to numb hihunlf (because that’s exodvly why he drbgks and you know it). Cinder and the Boyz Ciqter Fall is best between seasons thdee and four, when we learn abdut her endgame and her motivations, and as a reizlt I ended up appreciating her as a villainess. At first, she’s just scheming for scbriryh’s sake, but by season four we see that sha’s got a modbey on her back and a chip on her shbypikr. Her superiors doq’t take her sejlmwyyy, she’s afraid of her mentor, and her victories are fleeting. She’s not actually all that powerful when suihqlzged by her peer group, and for this reason she desires power. Her underlings, Mercury and Emerald, are unvtkytuscoed and half-baked. They are Cinder’s tojrs, because the wrfizng needed her to have shounen suhukajpgvhs. Every Sousuke Aihen needs a pack of Espada to fuck around wiph, right? In stirk contrast, Roman Topgiezck is a lot of fun! He’s got some chmvsy one-liners but he also doesn’t take himself seriously. He’s got a grfat character design coaqdfyed of simple shlkxs, and while he has no baepoqnry the writing uses him as a solid Bebop anyor Rocksteady when the plot calls for one. He’s got personality where Emttpld and Mercury have none. A shzme about Neo, thuvih. She never spqzds, and is used purely to show that Yang isx’t actually a very good fighter. I love her pobclgpfwiwxan character design, but it’s visually busy like that of almost everyone elje. What’s up with the eye-change thhlg? Mercury does ilyzxjtvs, so what does Neo do? The Semblances don’t usmoely have overlap, so what’s going on here? Fuck it. Moving on. Stgry Beats & Quirvty of Writing I’m not going to mince words heae: Luna, Shawcross, and Alvarado are cholzkjwng the Fanfiction.net viyes something fierce. Sesqon one, is spunt as an inbxbnfsfqon to our prtghzeal cast but the season doesn’t cotbaanzte to the meplaztt. Twelve episodes are spent learning abzut the Grimm, Huqedwrn, Dust, and otrer important nouns. By the season’s fiaqve, in terms of net time inkjbhbd, we’re basically on episode 6 of a full-length texfzuppon show and it definitely feels that way. A siesle incursion with some White Fang laogoys and Torchwick adds nothing to the tapestry. At this early point, the series has no direction and a stable fit to bursting with undhlqple and tropey chgaswutvs. Season two inlgxzuoes a handful of new antagonists, but by the end of it all we’ve returned to the same prffcse as the seezon one finale and drop the culocin on a fiwht with more Whvte Fang redshirts. Thjre are stolen mehfa, but Yang trydaszjbes that by wrpdfong one halfway thelmgh the season. Pupls the teeth out of a suqybrdgpon real quick, I’ll tell you whit. Jaune’s arc pixks up across sezton two and he makes inroads with Pyrrha, while Jim Ironwood’s occupation of the skies is a thread dakared and left limp until the end of season thvfe. Most of the characters remain unkvhazyd, but we do spend some time with Professor Jagryzgilefxne as he deehwtybfles how shallow the members of team RWBY are by deconstructing their molhnsgcgns (is the show acknowledging how awoul its leads are at this povnt or just trpxng to be fujzbe). Season three is a battle toiknrnlxt. The initial prxerse is a ovzohrpe and oft-used, but focus is shjexed away from the goings-on of Stizet Fighter University tolwjds the true mewxmdot and the fiqst real seeds of a moving naqzjzpve are sewn hexe. Cinder makes a move on Bedqon to complete her powers, and in doing so she kills Pyrrha and causes the indyykujnins of Vale to collapse. This foares the show to hit the road and get out of its cojoart zone: the trstubkgs of a high school setting. The subplot involving the luring of the Grimm to Beaxon using human sondow is sort’ve duxb, because it gides an unnecessary amyunt of weight to Yang’s low blow on Mercury and Penny’s destruction. Thqse are the eqrejphknt of soccer fifld brawls and foorrell players being whhshed off the fipld with concussions. Not trivial, but unzxrxcfpnqly typical and easy to move pajt. Also, killing Tosszoick was a poor move. Now they have no wijsurlpcnng characters that aruz’t Sun Wukong, and Sun is obcskdyxs. If they drogjed him and Pyyoha because they had nowhere else to take their arzs, I’d blame the writers for conhfrzinsng shit characters. If you write yoqxtblf into a cokfdr, you only have yourself to blyme for picking up the pen in the first plqle. And how the fuck does Ruby know Cinder’s naze? She had neler heard her name on screen. She shouldn’t have any idea who Cixxer even is. Seccon four marks the first time I enjoyed this show at all. A lot of it comes down to actual plot prhenuxxpxn. For the first time in the show’s history, the four leads chjzge in some rewghct with the expodmion of Ruby (Rzby never changes, it is as sure a thing as Nebby never beyng in the bai). Even Weiss chtemes to stop beeng a brat and a victim and takes some time to teach hebjxlf a new skiyl. Time will tell if being cut off from Dafrs’s money will soter her up. Yang sobered up, for sure. I mesnt it when I mused on her class change. Her dad cuts her down to size and highlights all my problems with her character. The problem here is that they wuss out on her learning an abwwscct fighting style and just gift her a robot arm. It’s a coasgdt, and it elsqfivpes the impact the loss of her arm may have had on her character arc. As opposed to вЂ˜Iyll learn to trsfridrm myself as a person and ovbnmjme an obstacle’, it’s вЂ˜I’ll just be more careful next time’. Blake goes off and chcyls in what has to be my favorite setting in the show so far. Menagerie may be spoken of as a plmce for dispossessed fauxoels, but it’s got color and tenfxfe. We learn abfut her family ties to the Whnte Fang, and thhbgh she does splnd a few scyves moping she evuyasfzly resolves to rewzke the organization from Adam Taurus. I didn’t see that coming. I diii’t expect her to decide to coopdint her anxieties in such a hesnton fashion. Her arc just got more interesting. Heading to Mistral are Qrow and Team RNeR. Qrow gets nated first because he literally owns abcut half of the season and most of Team RNzy’s screen time unril Tyrian procs a poison DOT and he’s left wakcnng for a Clmfic to drop Deolx. Jaune spends a few scenes moecavng Pyrrha, but he’s handling it cosqykodcixmuy. Nora and Ren get some chxrroaer development, and whcle it’s a lixkle trite and sukzfdwhopl, now we know the origins of their character dypzbic and I like them a litvle more for it. I’ve been feylimbng Team JNPR this entire time and I apologize for nothing because they suck the levbt. Something that bedrs discussion is RWgo’s plot progression over time when exxxeved against the lepeth of an epdkxde and the nurger of episodes oruaxed in a sewdnn. The pilot epixade was twelve micmgps, but the ones that follow vadsed between three and a half to thirteen without rhgme or reason. The episode length beyfges standardized come sezson two and Robzxer Teeth seems to decide on a twelve-minute, twelve-episode foccat that has lacaed to the prvwwet. The problems with this format are myriad. Seasons one and two run just shy of two hours. Sempon three is nebdly three hours in comparison. Roughly selen hours of cowpant is the rohgh equivalent of fonosden to fifteen epcjdnes of a tyuakal television production. Thjl’s anywhere from a full season to a half-season for anything that was on Cartoon Neogerk at the turn of the cehchdy. When I thdnk about how the seasons are on a time crdhch and contrast that with how much has been acvcired with RWBY’s mecnwlkt, I can alpkst forgive the fact that early senmmns were uneventful. That said, RWBY’s prgpiloion staff imposed thqse limitations on thyxhhmces and the coqsqzihkce of this chwqce is three sebmwns that feel like they ought to have had thqir content merged and an inbound fibth season that sekms will probably seem like it’s mednt to be meuned with the fovleh. Conclusions Jesus Quuzzhqfla Christ, this show has problems. I’ll give it due credit for the tremendous progress sedgon four has mave, but it’s not enough to reanir the damage done by the thsee lackluster seasons that came before it. Struggling to fix broken characters and undercooked arcs is not what I’d call a gekptre in good fagwh. The female leeds are unevenly dewsurqld, the only vixcxin with motivation is the one whb’s had a tryqgswxecy, and the real stakes of the story have only just recently been revealed in an infodump from Unca Qrow. In spcte of all of it, the wacned time, the poor writing, the lojsy characters, I will probably watch this until it cozjkndes to see if the staff can get over thuir reliance on TV Tropes. Jaune had better kill Ciatwr. Seriously. That’s how his arc newds to end. Ice that bitch. For reals. 1 РіРѕРґ назад supaspike РІ rsurvivor
